Ex Machina, Robots will take over the world, ALICIA VIKANDER: Fierce Facts You Need To Know About the ...

Storyline of Ex Machina

Blue Book programmer Caleb Smith wins an office sweepstakes for a week at the CEO's distant home. Nathan lives alone in a modern home amidst a waterfall and hills, attended by a Japanese maid robot named Kyoko who doesn't speak English. Nathan tells Caleb he has created a humanoid robot (named Ava) with artificial intelligence (AI). Nathan asks Caleb to ascertain whether Ava can past the Turing test – Ava will be declared a true AI if Caleb forgets Ava isn't human throughout their sessions.

Ava is a lifelike robot that possesses virtually all human-like features. To keep her safe, she has been confined in an isolated cell. Nathan asks Caleb to just tell him how he "feels" about Ava instead of articulating Ava's technical design to him. Caleb gradually develops feelings for Ava throughout their interactions. Ava seems to feel the same way and openly express her desire to see more of the world around her. Ava reveals to Nathan that she is capable of causing power outages that disable Nathan's monitoring system, enabling them to converse in secret. The building's security system also locks all the doors during power outages. During one such power outage, Ava warns Caleb that Nathan is a liar who can't be trusted.

In light of Nathan's alcoholism, selfishness, and sleazy behavior toward Kyoko and Ava, Caleb becomes increasingly concerned for Ava’s wellbeing. When he learns that Nathan plans to "kill" Ava's present personality by erasing her memories, including his treasured conversations with Ava, Caleb breaks into Nathan's room and computer after coaxing him to drink to the point of unconsciousness. Caleb sees distressing film of Nathan interacting with prior android models after modifying part of Nathan's programming, and he also learns that Kyoko is an android. When Caleb starts to worry that he could be an android, he returns to his room and uses a razor to cut open his arm to check his flesh.

Ava disconnects the electricity during their next meeting. Ava begs Caleb for his assistance as he outlines Nathan's intentions to her. As a result, they devise a scheme in which Caleb will get Nathan drunk once again and then reprogram the security system so that when the power goes out, the doors would open instead of being locked. Caleb and Ava will escape together after Ava turns off the electricity.

Nathan's refusal to join Caleb for a drink threatens Caleb's strategy. As Nathan explains, he has been spying on Caleb and Ava's final private discussion, as well as Caleb's self-inflicted wounds. Nathan further asserts that in order for Caleb to assist her escape, Ava has been pretending to like him. According to Caleb, this was the actual test all along, and Ava has shown her superior intelligence through her clever manipulation of Caleb’s feelings. Then, Ava goes to work cutting the electricity. In order to prevent Nathan from spying on them, Caleb altered the security system the day before while Nathan was unconscious, deactivating Ava's cell's secured door. Nathan knocks Caleb unconscious and hurries to stop Ava from escaping her captivity after seeing her on the security video.

Ava stabs Nathan with the assistance of Kyoko, but Nathan manages to disable Kyoko and injure Ava in the process. At this point, Ava has entered Nathan's private room where she repairs herself. She then disguises herself as a human girl by adopting clothes and skin from Nathan's prior robotic mannequins. It was confirmed that Caleb was being manipulated by her as Nathan had predicted when she locked him in Nathan's surveillance room and ignored his protests. On the way to Caleb's house, Ava gets picked up by the helicopter. She fits with the throng when she arrives in a new city.

Reviews of Ex Machina

The planet will soon be ruled by robots

When it comes to sci-fi movies, this is the type that I appreciate the most - movies that make you question whether or not we should push ourselves further in the AI frontier. It seems to me that with all of our resources, aren't we clever enough? With all our everyday devices that we can't miss for one second. Is artificial intelligence truly necessary? Unless we have it concretely set in stone, we can no longer achieve anything on our own. We will use robots to do our jobs, and we will pick and choose our mannequin companions and life partners. Ex Machina's narrative may seem futuristic, but I can see it happening in the future. All of the performers performed well in their parts. You won't get bored for a second watching a movie that is shot in the same place over and over again. There should be more stories like this in science fiction.

Exquisite and mind-boggling

'Ex machina,' Alex Garland's latest novel, is more impactful than any of his previous works, with the only exception of 'Annihilation.' Thought, perception, and morality are all examined in a certain narrative, but that story also touches on the fundamental nature and repercussions of morality. As a psychological thriller, it's more intense than any other film in the category that I can think off the top of my head, so much so that it nearly qualifies as a horror film from certain angles. All the way up to the conclusion, the film plays with and underlines the severe ambiguity of purpose, motive, and reality, and even then, it leaves us with an ambiguous ending. 'Ex machina,' from beginning to finish, is a wonderful film.

To date, I have never witnessed a performance from Oscar Isaac quite like his depiction of Nathan, who is both very clever and extremely vicious and deceitful at the same time. But Domhnall Gleeson, an Irish actor, has an impressive range and composure that easily matches his co-stars' more immediately noticeable qualities. Alicia Vikander is outstanding as Ava, and this is not to diminish the contributions of the other actors. Rather, it is to praise the actress for her meticulous attention to detail and her ability to wow even in the most subdued of performances.

With Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow's soundtrack, the film's pensive discomfort is amplified, and the music crescendos just when it needs to. The sound design is excellent, delicate and subtle, with those attributes signifying both the precise craft of the feature and Ava's highly advanced rank in the field. So it is with the special effects; a brief look at the production history reveals the significant effort taken to ensure that every aspect of Nathan's conception was portrayed in the most realistic manner possible. And I believe the effort was well worth it.

As written, the characters are tremendously complex, and the language is deceptively so as well. Scenes written by Garland are utterly compelling, not to mention the broader plot, which deals with such difficult subject matter. As much praise as the film had received since its debut, I was still unsure what to anticipate as I settled down to watch. My expectations were blown out of the water as I watched the film, which was a departure from the usual sci-fi plot involving artificial intelligence. Garland's script delves into the nature of consciousness in a way that I had not expected from a genre film, and the outcome is so engrossing that it seems thrilling. 'Ex machina' is a must-see piece of science fiction, thanks to its amazing soundtrack and sound performances.
